Significant theme in the story

This story teach each human being that life is not long as it looks, it is actually very short and that's why is important to appreciate what is given in it.

In a part of the story Sim's siste, dark tells him that this world of them was the way it was because of the scientists, meaning that scientist looking for impossible answers would just make everything worse.

Another way to look at this story is that when someone fight really hard for something they want the result at the end is the victory of reaching its goal, but as any other science fiction story it could be interpreted in many different ways. Every person has a differnt point of view on any subject.

Importance of Setting

Cliffs: The structure of the cliffs was vital to the characters in Frost & Fire. The cliffs that Sim lived in provided a shield from the harsh environment outside. The Northern cliffs that Sim stayed in before leaving for the seed was different from the ones he was born in because it slowed down
his pulse and reduced the effects of the radiation, so he was able to live another three days. Without those extra days he wouldn't have been able to make it to the seed.Seed: The seed was placed far enough away from the cliffs to add to the drama of the story. It posed as a constant obsession for the inhabitants of the cliffs. It would always hold their salvation, but always seemed unreachable. Once Sim had made it, the seed stopped him and Lyte from aging all together.

Characterization

Frost and fire's main character was Sim.
Sim is independent because after he reach the stage of adolecence he starts a journey on his own in his desperate need to find the scientists.
He is also intrepid/brave because knowing the consequences of his actions he challenged other people and the fire of the sun itself in a war to gain more days of life.
He is smart because he knew that if he went on to war he would gain more days of life to get to the ship.
And finally he is a curious character because from the beginning of the story he asked himself why life on this pllanet was the way it was? why his parents died? and what was the secret withing the ship?

Symbolism

Ray Bradbury takes a lot of influence from other authors. On this story his influence is Robert frosts’ poem “fire & ice”Fire and IceSome say the world will end in fire,Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desireI hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice,I think I know enough of hateTo say that for destruction iceIs also greatAnd would suffice. In the poem the Fire represents Desire while the Frost represents Hate. In Bradbury’s short story the Fire represents the desire of all the characters, specifically Sim’s, to leave, while the Frost represents his conflicting thoughts of staying to live out his short life. Two of the main characters in Sim’s life were his sister, Dark, and the girl he planned to marry, Lyte. Their names representing the two times of day that was extremely harmful to them.

Frost and Fire's Summary

Ray Bradbury’s short story, Frost & Fire takes place on a planet where all the inhabitants can only live for eight days because the solar radiation quickened their pulse, thickened their skin, and changed their blood.
When a ship, known as a seed, crash landed on the planet ten thousand days ago, it resigned the people to living in the cliffs, the only place they were safe from the sun where it was so hot it could burn them, and the nights were so cold they could freeze. The only time of day they can leave is dawn and sunset for only an hour, where they can gather food, and enjoy the outside. The main character,
Sim is born in the cave and through racial memory understands what’s happening around him. His parents are aging rapidly, and so is his older sister, Dark, who is only a day ahead of him. In the eight days they have to live they develop from baby to senior. They learn love hate jealousy anger rage marriage and customs very quickly. What makes life even more difficult for them is that through racial memory they understand that life shouldn’t only last eight days. One day as Sim is outside he notices a seed and decides that one day he is going to try to reach it. Sim learns about the scientists and goes to visit them. Sim hears about a war to fight the people who live in the farthest cliffs. If they win they live an extra three days. Sim agrees and ultimately wins a fight and stays in the cliffs with Lyte, the girl he has chosen to marry. In the cliffs, their pulses slow as a mineral sult- protection against solar radiations. Sim eventually reaches the seed with Lyte. As they stay inside the air locked seed for a few days they realize that they don’t get older. Sim devises a plan of how to get the others from the cliffs and comes back with his sister and a few others to help fix the ship. Sim takes over as commander and they get the ship working again. Lyte tells him she had a dream that she lived on a cold-hot planet, Sim told her to forget the nightmare and the ship rises and takes off into space.
